This illustration show the work of, Dr. Yongfeng Lu, an engineer at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Lu and colleagues employ lasers to develop new methods for crafting these thin tubes made from carbon. Dr. Lu’s method precisely varies the diameter and properties of these structures. These designs could improve transistors and sensors in a range of electronics.

Created in 3D Studio Max and Photoshop, this illustration was one of three finalists awarded in the illustration category of the NSF’s 2011 International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge.

This illustration is one of those examples. As far as I understand, it shows where silicon nanotubes have grown between metal nodes. When shot with a laser the nodes become white-hot on the end.

NUgrant is a research administration system designed to manage all research done at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Which means what the system is required to do is massive. This system covers everything in the research life-cycle from helping researchers find funding opportunities to helping them submit their grant to helping them manage their grant when they receive funding. The system also aids the compliance office to ensure proper research practices.

Beyond that, an event management system is an extremely useful tool for university events. A mini content management system provides a way to manage the Office of Research website. There is a way to manage campus core facilities on campus, etc.

Built in PHP via a framework developed by my colleague at UNL, this system was developed by a group of 5 people employed by the Office of Research. I have many contributions to the system, but my major contributions involve the look and feel of each module, the event management system, the core facilites system, the funding announcements system and the content management system.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln researcher, Dr. Yongfeng Lu, discovered a method for producing precisely aligned nanotubes in a single step. The illustration was created for Dr. Lu to use in explaining his research to people outside his specialized field and proved useful at making the invisible visible.

Created using 3DS Max, it was tweaked and re-created multiple times in photoshop.

The illustration was entered in the National Science Foundation’s 2010 International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge. It was selected as a finalist.

The campus maps for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln were developed as a comprehensive modeling project. As manager of the project, I, along with the help from three student workers created a detailed 3D model of every building on campus. As a comprehensive 3D model, it has many current uses and many possible future uses. But it’s main function is for printed, campus signage and online campus maps.

To create the maps, we used 3D Studio Max for the main map and Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to add the finishing touches.

But I have always had a love of art, so combine the computer base with my minor in studio art and viola, you get me.

Born and raised in small town Nebraska, I’m passionate about everything this great state brings – yes even (or especially) the cold weather. Call me strange.

On a clear day you can see 25-30 miles, overlooking one of Nebraska’s most scenic rivers, the beautiful North Loup River Valley. The website was created to reflect this magnificent view.

Originally developed with flash, which included integration in a cms called BigAce, I re-created the site in HTML, CSS, PHP & jQuery all powered by WordPress.

Daugherty Water for Food Institute at the University of Nebraska is a research, policy analysis and education institute committed to helping the world efficiently use its limited freshwater resources, with a particular focus on ensuring the food supply for current and future generations.

This site is powered by WordPress, and utilizes CSS, HTML & PHP. The website also contains a conference component which is fully integrated into WordPress and an event registration system. WordPress integration allows conference workers to easily update the schedule, post a blog entry & manage content in general. It also integrates with flat screen monitors at the conference, giving attendees a countdown to the next session, current sessions, conference tweets and blog entries.

The event registration system provides an easy management system for conference workers, but also allows for public widgets such as a dynamic map that shows where all conference attendies are coming from.

The 2009 Annual Report from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln needed an online companion, which was provided by this website. The site provides information featuring research at UNL, which includes selected video, photos and information resources related to the featured stories.

This particular website may have been my last website developed almost entirely with flash. It’s base in flash allowed for some nice animations and transitions. But as smart phones were starting to become more popular around the time this site was created, I decided to transition away from flash. Something that is evident in the next version(s) of the Annual Report site. But as far as a flash-based website goes, I think this one was a good final hurrah.

To create the campus maps for the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, I created a detailed 3D model of every building on campus. After each building was created, I had a comprehensive 3D model of the entire campus that could be rendered from about any angle with any desired lighting which could showcase any portion of campus. I am not aware of how widely this model and maps are used, but the comprehensive 3D nature of the base model, the potential for uses is large.

To create the maps, I used 3D Studio Max for the main map and Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to add the finishing touches.
