December 3rd LAG General Meeting Minutes

Donna Pozehl welcomed everyone. The secretary’s report was approved as printed in the October newsletter. The treasurer’s report was given by Connie Backus-Yoder and approved by the club.
Committee Reports
Program Committee:  Wanda Medina announced that the Chinese New Year dinner will be on Saturday, January 18th at 6:00 p.m. at the Imperial Palace.  Cost will be $11.00 and an art gift exchange (optional).
Donna announced that the February meeting will be our critique with Carolyn Albracht. Keith Larson presented his concept for a 55+ contest.
Calling Committee:  Jan Pippitt said she needs two people for her committee. Donna reminded everyone about dues. A motion for adjournment was made and seconded.

About Guest Artist Carolyn Albracht

Carolyn Albracht is an artist, educator and owner of L’eglise Art Center and Gallery in Aurora, Ne.  She works primarily in oil pastel, creating bold, colorful figurative and feline forms.  More recently she has begun exploring watercolor and Prismacolors.  She has exhibited her work throughout Nebraska since 1999.  She also exhibited her work and was a member at Gallery Nine in Lincoln from 2001 to 2007. Currently, she exhibits work at Louisville Art Gallery in Louisville, Nebr. and So-Oh Fine Arts in Lincoln, Nebr.

Ms. Albracht studied Studio Art and Psychology at the University of Nebraska at Kearney where she earned her B.A., and then continued her studies at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, receiving an MA in Museum Studies.  She is now finishing classes at UNL to obtain a teaching certificate in art education.  Her first public school teaching position is at Hampton Public Schools, working with high school students, beginning in the fall of 2009.

In 2003, Ms. Albracht opened L’eglise Art Center and Gallery, where she teaches art to children, Hosts art workshops for teens and adults, and curates exhibits of work by area artists.  Ms. Albracht also served as the Visual Arts Coordinator for the Fall Arts and Music Festival in Aurora for four years, and continues to serve on the Fine Arts Board of the Hamilton Community Foundation.  She believes the arts are a necessity and not a luxury, and so strives to make the visual arts as accessible as possible to people in her corner of the world.

55+ Contest

The Front Page Art Contest for The Lincoln 55+ Seniors Paper is asks for new, original Art that meets requirements for presentation on the Front Page of their quarterly newspaper. The 2014 Front Page Art Contest will offer prizes, recognition and media exposure. In addition, the Front Page winner will be purchased. The contest is co-sponsored by the Lincoln Artist Guild (LAG) who will help with promotion, logistics, and displays. Three judges will assess the entries based on criteria for Front Page artwork. The “Best of Show,” and all other entries, entries will then be considered as the “Front Page” winner.  In this top award, the artist’s price will be a consideration because the piece will be purchased by the 55+ and published in the Fall 2014 Issue. If you are interested, please email your intentions to Art@lincoln55plus.com. Artists will be asked to display their work at the Bennett Martin Library during the month of July. LAG will consider additional locations for possible display. Contest Details – To enter: **You must be a member, become a member, or be sponsored by a member of the Lincoln Artists’ Guild. See www.lincolnartistsguild.org Front Page Art Requirements include: Subject matter – Iconic – broad recognition with a focus on our Senior Audience. The goal is to decorate the Front Page of the Lincoln 55+ Seniors Paper.

Special consideration – The Front Page of the newspaper is folded for stacking and the top half of your artwork will need to convey a meaningful portion of the image. Newsprint ink – Strong colors are best. Colorful art with good contrast is desirable.  Examples – See previous Front Page Art at www.Lincoln 55Plus.com   Go to Archives.Media – **2D art medias, must be framed and wire hung for display, canvas wrapped paintings need to be painted on the edges otherwise, must be framed. Orientation – Vertical Proportion – 8 wide by 10 tall (16 x 20, 20 x 25, etc) Min. Size – 8” by 10” tall Max. Size – 24” by 30” tall
Photo – submit an Art photo (3 to 5 megabytes is best) to Art@lincoln55plus.com.Include Title, your name, Media type, price and your phone number. It is OK to mail your photo to the Lincoln 55+ PO Box. Bio – Winners will be asked to provide an artists statement about the work (100 to 300 words is typical.) Identification: Please include a legible tag with the title, artist, media style and your Price – Each entry must be for sale. Permission – The 55+ Requires permission to use the image in future issues. Display – All entrants will be asked to bring their original art to Bennett Martin Library. Details will be provided.
