September 2016 Program

Presentation by Julie A. Childers “You Booked a Show – Now What?”

Our presentation on September 6, 7:00 P.M. at Captiol City Christian Church will be given by Julie A. Childers. Julie is a member of Lincoln Artist Guild, is the Board Secretary, works with Jane Chesnut on promotions, and has helped Donna Pozehl with the Winter 2015 and Spring 2016 LAG shows. She has had two solo shows, May 2016 at the UNL East Campus Loft Gallery, and September 2016 at the Cottonwood Café in Lincoln, NE.

She will be taking us through the qualifications of what is accepted at LAG and most galleries for exhibit, and how to prep for a show once you’ve got it booked. She will be concentrating the evening’s time on how to properly wire your framed or unframed piece for gallery hanging, and will be giving a demonstration. She asks that you bring 1-2 framed/unframed pieces (no heavier than 20 lbs) that are ready to be wired for hanging, and the following materials:
D-rings (Amazon link: http://a.co/b7dSy4l)
Hanging wire, appropriate strength (Amazon link: http://a.co/1xRIOQt)
Wire cutters
Ruler
Pen / pencil
If you do not have d-rings or wire, you may purchase enough for your project from Julie for $2 per painting.

Julie grew up in the small village of Bow Valley, in northeast Nebraska. She attended Cedar Catholic High School, Wayne State College, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Southeast Community College. While at UN-L she attended classes in Drawing, Design, and Photography. Influenced by those classes, she also takes her inspiration and some technique from Gerhard Richter and Jackson Pollock. Her favorite quote by an artist comes from Richter: “I have nothing to say, and I am saying it.” Inspired by other artists, and curious just to see how well she could express herself through it, she started painting in 2014. It’s a way for her to creatively show emotion through color and shape, and a quiet pastime.

Instead of a brush, Julie prefers to use palette knives or her bare hands to manipulate the acrylic paint. Julie loves to experiment with new techniques, sometimes choosing to sand down or scrape away the layers to reveal what’s underneath, creating a new image. In her mixed media pieces, she uses torn pages from old books, decoupages them to the canvas, then paints over them and sands down to reveal pieces of the paper. She considers herself a tactile person, and enjoys playing with the weight, body and viscosity of the paint as it moves on the canvas. She usually doesn’t start with a finished picture in mind; instead she picks her colors and technique, building up layers into an image.

In 2015 Julie won an Award of Merit for her piece, “Untitled”, in the Lincoln Artists’ Guild 2015 Winter Show. She won the People’s Choice Award for her piece, “White Swirl”, in the Lincoln Artists’ Guild 2015 Spring Show. Her piece, “Blur”, qualified to go to the 2016 Association of Nebraska Art Clubs statewide competition. Julie gave a presentation on her art and techniques at the Palmyra Memorial Library on June 5, 2016. She showed her pieces, “From a Great Height” and “Blue Swirl” at the Seward Civic Center in June-July 2016. Julie is also a member and volunteer with the Lincoln Artists’ Guild, serving as Board Secretary, on show committees, as Webmaster since March 2016, and promoting the Guild through social media and advertising. Julie lives in Lincoln, NE with her husband and four cats.

Julie’s artwork is available for purchase, and she also does work on commission. To see her full portfolio online, go to julieachilders.wordpress.com. Contact her at julie.a.childers@gmail.com or 402-770-8714.

Last fall our LWML (Lutheran Women’s Missionary League) at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lincoln needed a design for the banner at their 2016 convention to be held at Younes Center, Kearney, NE., Sept. 16-17, 2016. I submitted a design/painting for the theme, “Partakers of Grace.” Phil. 1: 7b. My design was chosen. I will be excited to see it at the Banner Processional at the Convention.

3D Art Show

Please remember that this is our first 3d show. We have attached a copy of the registration sheet. This must be given to the Treasure by AUGUST 23 because we will need to find space at Out of the Box to place these entries.   If you have been there recently, you know that they are really full at this time, but Myra thinks it will be better by August 31st.  Please don’t choose not to enter because of this.  We really want to give the 3D artists their own show.

Out of the Box has agreed that if you have a large piece, it can set outside by the east door area.

You will need to fill out one registration form for each entry and mail, e-mail, or hand it to the current Treasurer with the registration fee so that she has it in hand by August 23.   If you e-mail the forms, you will have to pay the fee at delivery.

Please print the registration form clearly, so we are able to have the titles correct on the tags that we will hang by your work.

These shows run for the entire month and we ask that you do not remove your artwork until the end of the month.   Pick up date will be September 30th.    At this time we are not sure if you will be able to leave your item longer than the month of September.   As long as we are showing at Out of the Box, the “not for sale” art will need to be picked up.

Ribbons and Awards will be given out:  Best of Show – $50.00, Merit Award – $25.00, and Honorable Mention – $15.00
