TAKING TURNS AT OUT OF THE BOX

BIG THANK YOU  to all of the members who have been signing up to run the gallery.  There are still members who have art at OOTB who are not doing their share.  We are asking these people to be at OOTB for 1 full day (or 2 half days) once a month.  We have had the calendar at our LAG meetings for people to sign up—so if you fit the category and don’t attend the meetings, you need to call Jan Blank at 402-488-0388 to volunteer.

When you are at OOTB, you can do art, pay bills, or anything else to make the time go faster.  You will be upstairs (the 48th Street entrance) to greet people, answer questions, and ask them to sign our book and give us their Email addresses.  Direct questions about OOTB items to the desk downstairs.  If someone wants to buy a piece of art, OOTB will take the money, etc.  If you sign up and then cannot be there,  Jan Blank will send a calendar with names and phone numbers each month so that you can call another artist to exchange dates to work.

If the people who have not volunteered don’t volunteer by the end of April, we will need to remove their artwork from OOTB.

Each member will also need to volunteer for a FIRST FRIDAY event 2 or 3 times during the year.  This will be above and beyond the one day per month volunteering.

Everything seems to be running smoothly with the gallery, but it is not fair that everyone is not volunteering.  Please do your part to make this venture a success.  It’s an opportunity we can’t let fall by the wayside, so please continue your support.  We’ve had sales of $2,000+ so far, and we’re confident this will improve.

Membership Dues

Please note that as of April 1st, if you have not paid your LAG membership dues, you will no longer be considered a member of the guild, will no longer receive newsletters, and if you have art showing at Out-of-the-Box you will have to pick it up. You will also not be able to participate in guild shows until membership for 2014 is paid.

Member Critique Idea

A couple of us have been discussing the benefits of a regular critique of LAG members’ artwork.  Our idea is to incorporate a critique of new work at every LAG meeting.  One format might be as follows. A member would display her/his work for viewing by the attending members.  Viewers would pick up and fill out a short critique card for each work displayed.  The cards, which would not identify the critic, would then be placed by the submitted art work and picked up by the artist at the end of the meeting.  This critique activity would deploy the artistic resources of the guild to those members seeking regular or periodic critique as a means towards artistic and technical growth.  Your comments and suggestions regarding this idea are sought and should be emailed to Lisa Cassel (limabean77@gmail.com) or Ted Pardy (rpardy2@unl.edu).

LAY AWAY AT OUT OF THE BOX

Jody has approved lay away for our art work.  However, since she is paying the sales tax for us, we will have to follow the guidelines as presented below.  If you have any questions, please call Donna 402-435-0172.  This can also be discussed at our next regular meeting on April 1st.  Lay away forms will be at Out of the Box.

Lay Away procedures for Artists

Artist must let Jody know which work they will except for lay away.  Both the artwork and inventory sheet will be marked.  The name tags will have a circle on them letting members and staff know that lay away is available for that item.

Jody will have some contracts provided by LAG for the buyer to sign. Jody will sign for the Artists.

When a buyer puts something on lay away, Jody will call the artist.  The artist must pick up the painting and keep it at their home until the last payment.  Arrangements can be made to meet the buyer at Out of the Box for the last payment of cash to turn the art over to the buyer.

Art priced $100.00 or less will not be accepted for lay away.

Because Jody is paying the sales tax for LAG members, collection of the money must be as follows:  Artist is to collect all the money, including the 25% and sales tax. and cash all checks to make sure they are good. Once it is collected, the artist will turn all the money in to Jody. She will issue a check for the proceeds (minus 25% and sales tax) to the artist.

CHANGE DATE FOR OUT OF THE BOX GALLERY

Change dates have been set for April 21st to April 25th. Paintings will be hung on April 25th. If you need to drop them off early, please put your work in the closet on the upper level, South side.  The number of pieces allowed per member is ten. If you have work there already just subtract that from your total. Make a new inventory sheet to give to Jody.  The back of your work should be clearly marked with your name, title, phone number and price.

If you have not shown your work there already, make sure Jody approves your work. Then make sure you have the required paperwork.  If you have any questions or don’t have what you need, call Donna 402-435-0172.

SPRING SHOW COMMISSION

The Spring Show will be held at Out of the Box.  They have agreed to charge a 15% commission on just the pieces in this Show.  LAG will also have a 15% commission. A Total of 30% commission will be charged on all art pieces sold in the Spring Show. Please mark the prices of entries with the commission in mind.

Everything else will have the 25% commission as usual.

The tags for the Spring Show will be different than the ones that we use on the rest of the art.  Please do not change any of your tags in any way.

art critiques

With the start of the season of judged art shows and critiques, I think this comment on critiques that I found is worth thinking about: “When critiqued by others, only take in what is relative and important to you and file away or discard that information that is not. Art is subjective. Remember that the painting you are showing is YOUR painting. When you go changing a painting just to please everyone else based on their own perspective or preferences, that painting loses a part of you and starts becoming THEIR  painting. April 1st Program–Life Drawing

A good artist must be able to transfer what they see in their minds to the movement of their hand and put on canvas or paper what they want to paint or sculpt.  The April 1st LAG Meeting will give everyone a chance to practice drawing an appropriately dressed, live model. Levi Gerlach is an experienced model, and will guide us through timed sittings giving everyone an opportunity to practice hand-eye coordination in drawing the figure. The meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. at Capitol City Christian Church.  Bring your sketch pads and pencils and be ready to see what you can do.
