August 4th LAG Meeting: Speakers Lisa Cassel and Myra Sontheimer

7-9 p.m. The August LAG Program/demonstration will be presented by Lisa Cassel. Lisa has been passionately studying and creating art since she was 11 or 12. She enjoys many kinds of art and mediums, and loves to experiment with new things often. Primarily a self-taught artist, Lisa enjoys sharing her love of art with people, and has taught art to home-schooled kids in the Lincoln area for a half a dozen years or so. Recently, she become a certified Bob Ross Instructor–a certification which she is excited to use to share art with even more people of all ages.

The topic for the guild meeting’s presentation is “Putting Humor in your Paintings”–and Lisa hopes to share the process she uses when she is imagining and planning her art, stories about her favorite (and humorous) artists that inspire her, and a little bit about drawing in perspective to create trompe l’oeil art and anamorphic art.

Members may want to bring some paper, rulers, charcoal pencils or sticks, graphite pencils, tortillions or other blending tools. Lisa will bring the supplies she has to share with those that do not have drawing materials, but if you have drawing paper, charcoal pencils and sticks and/or graphite pencils, erasers (gummy ones are the best!), and tortillions or other blending tools, then everyone can join in the fun and try some techniques! Myra Sontheimer from Out of the Box will be speaking on “How to Sell Our Art.”

Book Illustration Contest Winner

Week 3 Contest Selection Julie Lemons of Bennet, Nebraska – submitted a younger and older version of Annie. The judges liked them both, so both will be utilized and she will receive two books (one for each winning piece). All winners of the contest will be published in “Always on Target: Adventurous Annie Oakley” by Charlotte Endorf. Other winners you may know:
Michelle Watkins of Omaha – Annie’s costumes. Carol M. Svendsen of Norfolk – 1882 United states flag and the judges also fell in love with her Annie portrait. We guess this book cannot have enough of Annie! If interested in next weeks contest information, subjects and guidelines, contact Charlotte at endorf@cableone.net (Charlotte keeps original, needed if winner)

Halloween & Zombies moving In- again

Don’t forget!!! The Halloween store & Zombies will be moving into the upper level of Out of the Box in August. We need to remove all our art work on both floors of Out of the Box. I received an email from Jody that states, ” Yes, you can start to remove the Art in the afternoon after 3 pm on the 9th.  We want the store to look good for the weekend and that is the 8th and 9th, but after 3pm on Sunday the 9th would be good.  Thanks for asking, JODY.”

We will have to remove both the upper and lower level for just a few days. They will have to move some of their furnishings down to the lower level and if we remove our work the move will go much better than it did last year.  Remember, we would like you to leave your work till August 10 if possibleth. If work does not allow you to come in on the 10th it will have to be after 3:00 pm on Sunday the 9th.

Refreshments

Refreshments: Serving at the August meeting will be Rita Holland and Reida Wrenholt.   For September it will be Georgia Feister and Joyce Jacobs.

Congratulations, Lisa!!

Lisa’s art adventure included driving 40 hours or so (ONE WAY) to New Smyrna Beach, Florida (swinging by San Antonio first) to attend a Bob Ross Certification Painting school. Congratulations on the completion of your certification!  We are proud of you! You will have to teach us all how to paint happy little clouds!!! Way to go!! Let us know when and where we can take a class!

ANAC Conference LAG Results

This year’s ANAC conference in Columbus was wonderful! Lisa Ober judged over 300 pieces of art and selected 25 to travel around the state. Next year our 2016 conference will be held in McCook, NE, June 8-13. We hope to see you there!
The Lincoln Artists’ Guild had three award winners this year:
Award of Excellence (travel show) – “Day Dreamer” by Jude Martindale
Joy Long Pastel Award – “Sandhills Spring” by Sue Thelen
Honorable Mention – “Rocca Granary Sunrise” by R.L. Pardy

Jude Martindale also achieved the “Signature Award.” To receive this prestigious award, she had to receive at least five Award of Excellence awards over time! That is quite an accomplishment!!
Julie Lemons received the Gwen McKenzie Scholarship to use towards an art workshop or class to increase her skills in art. The Association of Nebraska Art Clubs is unique in that it is the only club in the United States that supports all the art clubs in the state. We host a conference every year where we invite a nationally known artist to judge work from all over the state. The top 25 pieces travel the state and are displayed throughout the year. Check out the website to see if you know any of the other award winners.
