September LAG meeting

September 5th is the next LAG meeting at Capitol City Christian Church at 7:00 p.m. Bring your sketch books because Sondra Jonson will be passing on her methods of sketching and drawing that she learned at Frudakis Academy in Philadelphia. Guests always welcome.

She is known for sculpting skills and will be doing a workshop at Lux Center for the arts Sept. 11-15 from 9:00 am -4:00 p.m. each day. She will be working with a live model. The class will learn anatomy, form, structures and proportions of the human head. She will walk students through the steps to create a life-like portrait of the model, beginning with the most basic structure and moving on to fine details. There are still some spots open and if interested in attending you can call Lux at 402-466-8692. LAG members do get a discount and the LAG league will pay a portion of it.

October meeting will be October 3 with the program being our Fall critique.

**President’s Potpourri**

Now that summer is over, let’s get down to details……..some of you may have heard that we were looking for a site that might be suited for our own gallery and studio space.  We were in touch with Steen and Jody about a wonderful building that they own that would work as both.  Boy were our heads spinning as we looked over the space.   “What could we do” “this would be so cool to do this” and “can’t you just see this”.  Then we got down to brass tacks so to speak……several of us sat down for coffee and hashed over everything, even writing down a pros and cons column, and in reality the lists were pretty even across the board, and then reality hit us…….we, as a non profit, do not, or will not, every have enough money to rent a facility for even a couple of months.  Have you seen the cost of rental property?  $8 – $12 a SQUARE FOOT.  So with our dreams shattered, we realized that we need a Fairy Godmother, one who would like to donate a place for us.  (anyone know of such a person?)  We love where we are at Out of the Box, but with them renting space also, that is not always going to be an option.  And now that I hear about the city voting to allow a large hotel to go up in the space formerly in the Skate Zone, will Armstrong Furniture sell that building to a hotel chain?  What will the future hold?  Who knows, but we will forever be an organization that sticks together.  Carmen Stineman

Summary of August LAG meeting

Julie Childers demonstrated pallet knife painting for the August meeting and some of the members tried their hand at doing it; but soon discovered that Julie made it look easy and it wasn’t. She put the paint down, used her pallet knife and “Varoom” a colorful design emerged. Another swoop of her knife and another combination of colors emerged. Her love of painting showed in her canvases that she brought along and her husband also shared how the splatters  decorated many items in their home as the paint traveled through the air onto some very interesting places.
