How to Price Art

Using your emotions when pricing your art is a recipe for disaster.  The art market dictates the worth of art, not you.  You may have a strong connection to your work, but that connection should not determine what you are charging.

Don’t compare your art with other artists.  They may have been selling for five or ten years and have developed a following.  Your work may even be better than theirs, however people may not know you.  You have to develop a connection to people with your art, and that takes time and a lot of hard work.

First time artists…..1.  Decide on an  hourly rate you want to be paid.  (maybe $20 per hour) 2.  Know the cost of materials.  3.  Know the cost of expenses to sell the art.  4.  Multiply your hourly rate by the amount of time it took to create the piece.  5.  Add the cost of materials and other expenses.  The sum will be your price.

Pricing Artwork Formula…..(square inches x your price) + Cost of materials + *Marketing Expenses.   *if selling online, how much for the online business, if selling at a craft show, add in the expenses associated with the show (booth, business cards, etc.)  Your cost might be $4.00 per square inch.
